Deed Joseph Fauntleroy to Peter Northen
November 6, 1810
This indenture made the sixth day of November in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and ten and in the thirty fifth year of the Commonwealth
between Joseph Fauntleroy of the County of Richmond and State of Virginia pf the
one part and Pete Northen of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said Joseph Fauntleroy for and in consideration of the
sum of eight hundred and eleven pounds and fourteen shillings and three
farthings of lawful money of this Commonwealth to him the said Joseph Fauntleroy
in hand well and fully paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he the
said Joseph Fauntleroy hath granted, bargained and sold and by these presents
doth grant, bargain and sell unto the said Peter Northen, his heirs and assigns
all those messuages, tenements, tracts or parcels of land situate, lying and
being in the said County of Richmond and Parish of North Farnham one of the said
tenements, tracts or parcels of land lying on Farnham Creek known by the name of
Mars Hill containing by a late survey two hundred thirty three and three quarter
acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows: Beginning at a chestnut
at the edge if a marsh in the line of land formerly belonging to Ann Downman's
estate but lately purchased by James Lyons, thence with
the same N72W83 poles to the northeast side of the edge of the flat or a swamp
making into Appleby's gate, thence up the said side of the said flat to where an
old fence makes into the said swamp (reference the said late survey will more
fully explain), thence up the said swamp its several meanders to the mouth of a
spring branch, thence up the said branch to an ash tree,
thence N65-15 W76-1/2 poles to a large dead red oak, thence S31W76 poles
crossing the road to Farnham Bridge to a stake in the old field corner with the
land belonging to the estate of Daniel Dobyns, thence with the same S26E110
poles crossing the said road to Farnham Bridge to a stake in the cornfield,
thence S81W13-1/4 poles on the south side of the said road to Farnham
Bridge opposet a hedge row of cedars in the line of the said Daniel Dobyns
estate corner with Thomas Hinds, thence with his lines S38 – 30 E94 poles to a
turn in an old ditch, thence S58 – 45 E70 poles to said Farnham Creek, thence up
the said creek its several meanders crossing the Appleby gate in a marsh opposet
the beginning chestnut, thence N72W37 poles to the beginning.
The other said tenement, tract or parcel of land lies in the low ground
containing by a late survey one hundred and sixty five acres be the same more or
less and bounded as follows: Beginning on the south side of the said road
leading to Farnham Bridge (seventeen and a half poles below the corner of the
above mentioned tract opposet hedge row of cedars) at or near where a stone was
formerly planted corner with the said land belonging to the estate of said
Daniel Dobyns in the said Thomas Hind's line, thence due W65 poles crossing the
said road to Farnham Bridge to a gum, thence N58 – 30 W11 poles to a large red
oak, thence S80 – 15 W 212 poles to a stake, thence N42 – 15 W102 poles crossing
the road to Slaughter's corner with Fanny Downman
formerly Colston's line of Webbs patent now Wilamira W Haynie's land, thence
with the same N56 – 30 E16 poles to a white oak corner to said patent now said
Haynie's, thence N25 – 30 W58 poles to a gum in the said line corner with James
Williams, thence his line N55 E 41-1/2 poles to a large red oak near a gum
corner James Williams and John B. Garland's land called Peacock, thence S68 –30
E356 poles crossing said road to Slaughter's to the beginning and also all
trees, woods, underwoods, tithes, commons and common pasture ways, water
courses, profits, commodities, advantages, hereditaments and appurtenances
whatsoever to the said two separate tenements, tracts or parcels of land above
mentioned, belonging or in any wise appertaining and
the reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders, rents, fees and profits
of the premises, and of every part and parcel thereof, and all the estate,
right, title, interest, claim and demand whatsoever of him the said Joseph
Fauntleroy of, in and to the said two separate tenements, tracts or parcels of
land and premises and every part thereof. To have and to hold the said two
separate tenements, tracts or parcels of land and all and singular other the
premises above mentioned and every part and parcel thereof with the
appurtenances unto the said Peter Northen, his heirs and assigns to the only
proper use and behoof of the said Peter Northen, his heirs and assigns forever.
And the said Joseph Fauntleroy for himself and his heirs, the said two separate
tenements, tracts or parcels of land and premises and every part thereof against
him and his heirs and against all and every person and persons whatsoever to the
said Peter Northen, his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant and forever
defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said Joseph Fauntleroy have
hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year first above written.

Received the sixth day of November on the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and ten of the within named Peter Northen the sum of eight hundred and
eleven pounds and fourteen shillings and three farthings of lawful money of this
Commonwealth it being the consideration mentioned within to be by him paid to

At a Court held for Richmond County the 3rd day of June 1811.
This Deed of Bargain and Sale from Joseph Fauntleroy to Peter Northen was proved
in open court by Henry Harford and William A. Packett two of the witnesses to
the same subscribed and ordered to lie for further proof and at a court
continued and held for the said County the next day, to wit, the 4th day of June
1811 the same was further proved by Clement Shackleford one other
witness thereto and submitted to record.
