Deed William Northen to Tobias Purcell
March 4, 1748
This indenture made the fourth day of March one thousand seven hundred and
forty eight and in the twenty second year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord
King George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland,
King, Defender of the Faith. Between William Northen if Richmond County and
Parish of Lunenburgh Planter of the one part and Tobias Purcell of the said
County and Parish aforesaid Planter of the other part.
Witnesseth that the said William Northen for and in consideration of one
thousand pounds of tobaccoe in one hogshead in hand paid unto the said William
Northen at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt
whereof the said William Northen is fully satisfyed and paid and therefrom and
every part and parcel thereof doth fully and absolutely acquit, exonerate and
discharge the said Tobias Purcell, his heirs, executors, and have given,
granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do give, grant, enfoeff, sell
and forever confirm unto the said Tobias Purcell and his heirs forever all that
piece or parcel of land situate, lying and being in the aforesaid County and
Parish containing by estimation fifteen acres be the same more or less:
Beginning at a corner hickory to Purcell and Thrifts, from thence along a line
of marked trees to a corner red oak standing near the head of a branch, from
thence along a line of marked trees that divides the said land of Medford and
Spendergrass to a black oak standing in the edge of an old fieald formally known
by the name of Linches Old Field, and from thence to Purcell's line including
the above quantity of acres be the same as aforesaid and the
reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders, rents, fees and profits and
all the estate, right, title, property, claim and demand whatsoever together
with all houses, out houses, timber and timber trees, woods and underwoods,
ways, waters and watery courses and all orchards, fences and gardens thereon,
touching the premises and every part and parcel thereof to the same belonging or
in any waises appertaining . To have and to hold the before granted premises and
every part and parcel thereof and all privileges
and appurtenances to the same belonging hereby granted, bargained and sold or
mentioned or intended to be hereby bargained and sold to him the said Tobias
Purcell, his heirs and assigns for ever to the only proper use and behoof of him
the said Tobias Purcell and his heir and assigns forever to beholden of the
Chief Lord or Lords of the fee or fees, by the rents and services accustomed to
be paid and the said William Northen for
himself and his heirs do covenant, promise, grant and agree with the said Tobias
Purcell, his heirs the said lands and tenements shall be free and clear from all
encumbrances whatsoever and will forever defend the same from the claim or
claims of all manner of persons whatsoever claiming under me to the end the said
Tobias Purcell and his heirs shall from time to time hold, occupy and possess
the same forever and doth further covenant and grant that at any time within
thirty years next ensuing to do and execute all such further act and acts, thing
and things, devise or devises, conveyance and
conveyances to the said Tobias Purcell, his heirs, assigns or his or their
council learned in the law shall advise or devise for the sure making and
conveying the said land and premises to the said Tobias Purcell and his heirs
forever and at any court held for Richmond County within six months ensuing to
acknowledge these presents and the same recorded. In witness whereof the parties
to these presents have interchangeably set their hand and seal the day and year
above written.

Memorandum: That upon the fourth day of March 1748 quiet and peaceably
possession was delivered by the within William Northen upon the said land in the
name of the whole land and tenements by turff and twigg that is within mentioned
to the said Tobias Purcell in presence of
William Garland
Jeremiah Brown
Andrew Anderson
John Purcell, Junior
At a Court held for Richmond County the 10th day of March 1748.
This deed for land for William Northen of the one part and Tobias Purcell of the
other part was proved by the oaths of Jeremiah Brown and Andrew Anderson
together with the memorandum of livery and siezon thereon endorsed and by the
Court ordered to be recorded.
