Robert Nixon Northen

Obituary – March 18, 1922

Richmond News Leader

 

The Following is the text of the obituary published in the Richmond Virginia News Leader on March 18, 1922:

 

Col. Northen, Aged 79, Dead

 

Funeral of Widely-Known Confederate Veteran to Take Place Tomorrow Afternoon at 2 o’Clock

 

“Colonel Robert Nixon Northen, 79 years old, a widely-known Confederate veteran, died this morning at 4’o’clock after a long illness.  His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home of his son, W. R. Northen, 3314 Grove Avenue.  The burial will be in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.

 

Colonel Northen was born Aug. 8, 1843, at Union Village, Northumberland County.  He was educated at Warsaw and at Stevensville Academy.  At the outbreak of the war between the states enlisted in Company B, Twelfth Virginia Infantry, and served one year in that command.  The remainder of the ware he served on General J. L. Kemper’s staff.  He was twice wounded, first at Seven Pines and again at Drewry’s Bluff.  He surrendered at Campbell Courthouse April 10, 1865.

 

He was prominent in the Confederate organizations of this city and was active in all of the offices of George E. Pickett Camp, No. 204, U.C.V., until recently.  He was also active in the efforts in behalf of the Battle Abbey, now known as the Confederate Memorial Institute.

 

While attending a Confederate reunion, Charles Broadway Rouss suggested to Colonel Northen in the idea of establishing the Battle Abbey and offered $100,000, provided an equal amount could be raised by the Confederate veterans to construct the building.  Colonel Northen was a member of Amity Lodge, No. 76, A.F. & A.M., and served as its secretary about twenty years.  He was also a member of Myrtle Lodge, Knights of Pythias.

 

Colonel Northen married Miss Margaret Briggs, daughter of Robert Briggs, who was an officer in the Confederate states navy.  His wife died Oct. 2, 1907.  He is survived by one daughter, Miss Agnes E. Northen; three sons, Robert B., William R., and Chastine L. Northen; two grandsons, William Morton Northen and Blair H. Northen, and one granddaughter, Miss Margaret E. Northen.”
