Return of Dower to Mary Northen
February
7, 1842
Pursuant to the annexed order, the undersigned
Commissioners therein named proceeded on the 10th day of February
1842 to allot to Mary Northen, widow of Edmund Northen deceased her third of
the slaves of said Estate according to the valuation below, allotting to her
one Negro man Samuel appraised at $500, leaving due from the said widow to
the distributees the sum of thirty-one dollars and 66-2/3 cents and, finding
it entirely impossible to divided the remaining slaves in kind, among eight
distributees, to submit the matter for the further instruction of the
Court.

At a Court of Monthly Sessions held for Richmond County
at the Courthouse on Monday the 7th day of February 1842.
Ordered that John F. B. Jeffries, Ebenezar Jeffries,
John Mayo and Lynne Shakleford or any three of them, to act, do allot to
Mary Northen, widow of Edmond Northen deceased her third of the personalty
of the said Edmund Northen deceased and divide the remainder if practicable
in kind among the distributes of the said Edmund Northen and there are
required to report their proceedings herein to the Court together with any
matter deemed pertinent by himself or required to be specially stated by any
party interested.
